65-year-old Portland man injured in boat accident near St. Helens

A 65-year-old man suffered serious injuries in a boat accident this morning in the Multnomah Channel.

The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office said that the crash occurred about 5:35 a.m. A fishing vessel operated by David White, a 66-year-old man from Beaverton, slammed into a steel piling in the water near St. Helens, throwing them against the dashboard and injuring his passenger.

John Veldnik of Portland was taken to Legacy Emanuel Hospital & Health Center, where he is in serious conditions, a spokeswoman said. White was not injured in the accident.

A news release said that there was poor visibility at the time because it was raining and dark. White was operating an 18-foot North River Outboard fishing boat.

The investigating is continuing.
