Michigan Wrongful Death Trial Set for Tommorow

More than five years after a New Hudson man died while struggling with police in a Hartland Township field, a lawsuit filed by the man’s daughter will finally go before a jury. Jury selection is slated to begin tomorrow in U.S. District Court in Detroit in the lawsuit filed by Amanda Landis. Her father, Charles Keiser, stopped breathing after a struggle with officers following his theft of a bulldozer on Thanksgiving Day 2004. An autopsy concluded Keiser died from an accidental drowning brought on by his efforts to resist officers trying to arrest him in the water-filled field. Landis filed a wrongful death lawsuit in 2005 against the three Livingston County Sheriff’s deputies and two State Troopers that were officers involved in the incident, but reached a $750,000 out of court settlement with Livingston County leaving State Police Trooper Greg Galarneau as the sole defendant. He is being defended by the Michigan Attorney General’s Office. The other State Trooper, Todd Cardoza, was killed in a 2005 automobile accident. (JK)
