West Valley City Motorcylce Cop Injured in Accident

A Utah cop was knocked off his motorcycle in a Friday morning accident, but a fellow officer said the accident could have been much worse.

“If he hadn’t had a helmet on, we’d be talking major head trauma,” said Lt. Bill Merritt.

The officer was chasing a traffic violator near 3200 West and 3600 South. He pulled into the center lane of traffic and turned on his lights to pass an uninvolved car, said Merritt.

“As he comes to the intersection, that car he’s passing tries to make a left-hand turn and pulls right into the side of the officer,” Merritt said.

The officer was able to stay upright on his bike, but the impact sent him into northbound traffic, where he ran into a second car.

Merritt said the officer’s helmet had a “good gouge” out of the back side. The officer was on his feet and talking, but he was disoriented and unsure what had happened when Merritt arrived five minutes later.

“He’s fine, but he had pretty good road rash on the right side of his body,” Merritt said, adding that the officer’s motorcycle, gun and other equipment were scuffed in the accident.

The officer has been released from the hospital, and he was sent home for the day.

Utah Motorcycle Accidents

Almost all Utah motorcycle accidents end up with the rider landing hard on the pavement. If you are not wearing the proper gear you will likely end up with fractured bones. Oftentimes the bones fractured are in the limbs – especially the wrists and the ankles. It is only natural for an individual to reach out when thrown from their motorcycle in an effort to cushion the impact. The small bones of the wrist are particulary vulnerable when hitting the pavement. A Utah Motorcycle Accident Lawyer can help you get compensated for your injuries.
