13 Kids Injured in School Bus Accident

An early Thursday morning commute to school for some students turned out to be quite the wake up call. The school bus transporting the children was rear-ended at a railroad crossing on Thursday, August 20, 2009, at 6:30 a.m.

The school bus accident occurred when a pickup truck towing a trailer slammed into the back of the bus stopped at a railroad crossing. The bus was carrying 35 children to an elementary school, when the truck reportedly wasn’t able to stop in time before rear-ending the school bus. Police officials said there were no life-threatening injuries, and the wreck did not cause substantial damage to the bus. Police reports indicated 13 students were transported by emergency medical services (EMS) crews to the hospital for treatment of injuries, which included sprains, bumps, and bruises.

Bus Wrongful Death

A 66 year old man, died on October 3, 2008, after being struck by the bus on September 30, 2008. The driver was charged with aggravated vehicular homicide (the criminal charges were, later, withdrawn).

The bus was making a left turn at the time. Two interesting things about this ariticle that I thought were worth reporting here: 1. You will notice that the case settled in about seven months. That is remarkable for a case of that size. The family’s Attorney said that the Authority “handled things appropriately given the circumstances”. It is nice to see a defendant admit that it was wrong, step up, and do the right thing in such a short period of time. 2. After the incident, the Authority started a training program called ‘Left Turn Blitz’, in which all 1200 or so of their drivers were ordered to pause two seconds and scan crosswalks and curbs before turning left.

The Authority may wish to offer a ‘refresher’ training course because the article reports that another left turn/crosswalk fatality happened on March 21 of this year. Hopefully, the Authority will step up again and do the right thing. Meanwhile, InjuryBoard members: I suggest that you tell your family members and clients to watch out for buses in crosswalks.

Chemical Truck Overturns, Causing Leak

Hydrochloric acid is leaking from a semi truck that overturned on a bridge on Monday morning, authorities said.

The Fire Battalion Chief told reporters that traffic to the bridge was closed off following the rush-hour accident, which prompted a chemical leak and a plume of fumes coming from the crash scene.

He said it remains unclear how much of the nearly 45,000 pounds of hydrochloric acid being carried in the truck had leaked so far.

The fire official said the semi truck driver was rescued from the vehicle and sent to the hospital with unspecified injuries. There was no immediate word on the cause of the accident.

While the immediate area was evacuated following the crash, firefighters were able to stop a larger leak from the truck.

It was reported that crews are working to plug the remaining rupture point, while the air quality east of the site is being examined by emergency crews.

An individual can experience pulmonary edema, as well as irritation and inflammation to the eye, nose and respiratory tract as a result of exposure to hydrochloric acid, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.
