Construction site accident takes 3 lives

A construction accident Wednesday afternoon  has left three people dead.

The Fire Department said four construction workers were on a scaffold that fell several stories at a parking garage construction site.

Scaffolding fell from the 11th story, landing on about the 7th or 8th story,” the Assistant Fire Chief  said.

One construction worker managed to hang on, another clung for his life on top of the garage and the other two fell straight to the ground.

“It sounded like somebody stepped on a piece of wood, and then I grabbed the dude I was working with, and we took off,” a construction worker  said.

The two workers on the ground and the one on top of the garage were taken to the hospital and later died. The fourth survived.

Now investigators search for clues as to what exactly happened.

As with any workplace death, Occupational Safety and Health Administration was on the scene, as well as the Police Department’s homicide unit.

“That is standard procedure in any death where homicide detectives respond to the scene to determine whether something is suspicious, accidental or homicide,” a police spokesman said.

The construction company and the architects on the project were unavailable for comment, as of press time.

All witnesses know is that they have an image in their minds that will remain a reminder of a tragic incident.

“There were three different sets of paramedics, each working on each guy, and all three of them are sitting there giving CPR to every single one of the victims that fell down,” a nearby business owner said.
